Welcome to the website of Richmond Hill Psychology Center
As parents, we want our children to be healthy, happy, and successful. We want them to grow, to acquire new skills and knowledge, to discover their special gifts and talents, and to form gratifying relationships with others. Human development, however, does not always proceed in a simple and consistent manner. All children go through stages of internal conflict which might lead to changes in behavior and emotional state. Some children have trouble coping with transitions, family changes (e.g: a birth of a sibling, a divorce), traumatic events, losses, and physical illness. At times, normal development may be blocked or thwarted due to a developmental, neurological, or psychological disorder. When parents become concerned, they often refer to parenting books and magazines. While a wealth of information can be gained through such resources, they will not always be able to explain what is happenning to your specific child. Understanding the child's experiences, their feelings and thoughts, is the first step towards helping them. If you want to gain an insight into why your child has certain difficulties and how to help them, you might consider consulting with a licensed child psychologist or psychotherapist.
The process usually starts with a parent interview in which we discuss your concerns and gather information about the family and the child's history. A child psychologist might then suggest to conduct a brief evaluation of a child's social-emotional functioning (3-4 hours), a psycho-educational assessment (6-8 hours), or a full psychological evaluation (8-10 hours). Based on the obtained information, we will select the most effective form of intervention. Sometimes, a few parenting sessions is all that is needed. Other times, individual child or interactive parent-child therapy is recommended. Recommendations to parents, teachers and all those involved with a child as well as referrals to other professionals are also an integral part of our work.
We are a group of qualified and licensed psychologists and psychotherapists. For more detailed information about our associates please visit the About Us Page. Our child psychologists diagnose and treat children with learning disabilities, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional-defiant disorder, anxiety, depression, or autism spectrum disorders. We offer a full range of psychological and psycho-educational assessments (incl. gifted testing), consultations to parents and teachers, and psychotherapy for children and adolescents ages 4 to 20. Based on a thorough evaluation, we may choose to address a child's issues through cognitive-behavioural therapy, play therapy, or relational psychodynamic therapy. Children's difficulties are often related to the family dynamics, maladaptive patterns of communication and/or the parents' relationship as a couple. To address these larger contexts, we offer family therapy and marriage (couples) counselling which are conducted by our highly experienced and qualified therapists. Our services are offered in English, Russian, Spanish, and Hebrew. Our office, which is located in south Richmond Hill, is easily accessible from Toronto, North York, Thornhill, Markham, Vaughan, Aurora, and Newmarket. The fees are within the guidelines suggested by the Ontario Psychological Association, and may be fully or partially covered by extended health insurance plans. Feel free to contact my office by phone or email if you require further assistance.
