Welcome to the homepage of Dr. Tali Shenfield

As parents, we want our children to be healthy, happy, and successful. We want them to grow, to acquire new skills and knowledge, to discover their special gifts and talents, and to form gratifying relationships with others. Human development, however, does not always proceed in a simple and consistent manner. All children go through stages of internal conflict which might lead to changes in behavior and emotional state. Some children have trouble coping with transitions, family changes (e.g: a birth of a sibling, a divorce), traumatic events, losses, and physical illness. At times, normal development may be blocked or thwarted due to a developmental, neurological, or psychological disorder. When parents become concerned, they often refer to parenting books and magazines. While a wealth of information can be gained through such resources, they will not always be able to explain what is happenning to your specific child. Understanding the child's experiences, their feelings and thoughts, is the first step towards helping them. If you want to gain an insight into why your child has a certain difficulty and how to best support them, you might consider consulting with a licensed psychologist.

The process usually starts with a parent interview in which we discuss your concerns and gather information about the family and the child's history. I might then suggest to conduct a brief evaluation of a child's social-emotional functioning (3-4 hours), a psycho-educational assessment (6-8 hours), or a full psychological evaluation (8-10 hours). Based on the obtained information, I will select the most effective form of intervention. Sometimes, a few parenting sessions is all that is needed. Other times, individual child or interactive parent-child therapy is recommended. Recommendations to parents, teachers and all those involved with a child as well as referrals to other professionals are also an integral part of my work.

I am a registered psychologist licensed to practise clinical and school psychology in the province of Ontario. In my practice, I diagnose and treat children with learning disabilities, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional-defiant disorder, anxiety, depression, or autism spectrum disorders. I offer a full range of psychological and psycho-educational assessments, consultations to parents and teachers, and psychotherapy for children and adolescents ages 4 to 20. Based on a thorough evaluation, I might choose to address a child's issues through cognitive-behavioural therapy, play therapy, or relational psychodynamic therapy. My services are offered in English, Russian, and Hebrew. Our office, which is located in south Richmond Hill, is easily accessible from Toronto, North York, Thornhill, Markham, Vaughan, Aurora, and Newmarket. The fees are within the guidelines suggested by the Ontario Psychological Association, and may be fully or partially covered by extended health insurance plans. Feel free to contact my office by phone 905.770.3249 or by email info@psy-ed.com if you require further assistance.
