Findings from psycho-educational assessments have indicated that there are a number of resolvable factors that influence a child's acquisition of academic skills and attainment of their cognitive potential. As a result, a learning strategies program was developed for high school and university students, on the premise that each child has the potential to build skills in time and stress management, critical thinking, and effective study habits. The course consists of four mutually-interrelated sessions which run on a weekly basis. The course is offered on an individual and small group basis. The first session is dedicated to active reading and note taking strategies, followed by an in-depth session on time and stress management, with a particular emphasis on organizational skills in a school settings. The third session teaches strategies for writing multiple choice, short and long answer tests. The course is concluded with a session on basic strategies for constructing and writing a coherent essay. Detailed summary handouts are provided to students at the beginning of each session.
